“As the nurse manager at the US Embassy in New Delhi, India, I have found University of Florida’s online MPH program has enhanced my understanding of health needs within the embassy community and greater Indian population. On a regular basis I refer to the knowledge I have gained from my zoonotic diseases course and epidemiology courses, as infectious diseases and disease transmission is a daily medical concern in the embassy health unit. The information I gained from the disaster management course last semester has helped me as I work with others in our embassy to conduct an embassy wide disaster drill. The online program has allowed me to pursue further education while still being employed full-time and living half a world away!”

“I am extremely impressed by the quality of the public health [online] program at the University of Florida. The professors are excellent at motivating their subject areas with real world information and experiences and I have found them to be extremely responsive to student questions and requests. I have gained invaluable insight into the public health arena and I was pleasantly surprised by the online delivery format. I feel that the workload and course requirements are rigorous but fair and similar to what would be expected of a student in a “traditional” class.

In addition, I have found that my fellow students where of the highest quality, very friendly, and I was able to learn not only from the professors but also from the diverse backgrounds and experiences of my classmates. I would highly recommend the program to anyone wishing to learn more about the public health field, but who does not have the time nor luxury to return to school as a full time student.”

“For those of us who have long backgrounds in health care, are tired and disillusioned, the Public Health on-line [program] provides a blast of fresh
thinking…..Instead of being bogged down by the mechanical, evidence based rote management of fixing broken systems we have been invited to think creatively
about the top down look at how it got this way, why, what we should do differently.

Even more refreshing is appreciating the differences in perceptions of health from the global perspective; logging on is a sudden transformation into a Star
Wars Saloon, a mish mash of ethnicity, race, politics and origins, all wanting to do the same thing, the right way. Imagine!”

“If [you are] interested in a career in Public Health, the 5 core courses for the certificate program in Public Health are an excellent way to get started. I have been an educator for over 30 years and have given and taken a number of courses over the years. These courses are among the best I have taken. The on-line courses allow you to find your own pace and progress through the courses with ease. You can review the lectures multiple times. You get instant feedback on most assignments and assessments. Not only that, but they are well designed classes. You get the feel of being in the classroom while still having the comfort of choosing the time and place. In fact, taking these classes has inspired me to want to change all of my classroom teaching to this format. We will still have some hands-on labs to augment the on-line instruction, but the on-line component will be very similar to what the College of Public Health and Health Professions has done in their courses. I think I have learned more in this format than in the actual classroom.

To be successful does take some self motivation, since you can also try to put things off until the last minute. The instructors do monitor the students time and progress, so they can gently prod the student who is not doing the work; but, for the motivated student, this format is fantastic. The discussion help assimilate the knowledge and to see how the other students are doing. You develop friendships by reacting to other students comments and by group assignments.

All in all, it is an excellent program of which I am proud to be a student in even though I am in the middle of my career as a teacher at UF for 30 years so far! Since I recently joined the inactive research of the USPHS as a veterinary officer, I felt that this program would help me understand public health better so I could be a better officer in service of our Country. The program has done that and much more. I now ask all my graduate students to take many of the classes offered in the program, since it makes them better scientists, as well.”
